Sound Cards - Worth it?

For the longest time I thought that sound cards are something of a novelty and that the main focus should be the GPU. Well I thought wrong, sound cards really do make you hear things you never heard before. With the Virtual Reality just around the corner, realism and immersion will be ranked higher compare to just point for point game play and general fun, as VR will be providing that.
